I enrolled in Auburn University in the spring of 2013 and will graduate in August of 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in public relations with a minor in business. I didn't start my college career at Auburn, I actually went to the University of Alabama my freshman year and transferred my sophomore year. Thanks to my professors and all the time and energy they put into teaching us students, I feel well prepared to take on a job and do it well. Style and Design in PR Messages
In this course, students learn basic HTML5 and CSS coding in order to create beautiful digital resume and portfolios like the one you are browsing through now. In addition to the website, students have weekly articles for three different publications, student use varios content management systems to write, edit and publish stories. Skills gained in this course include use and operation of Abode Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Dreamweaver. Students also learn how to create a GIF, infographic, magazine and become familiar with other software like Canva and Snagit.
Journalism Fundamentals
This is one of the very first PR classes students have to take before applying to the major. This class tests the students' ability to write effectively with focus on AP style, spelling and grammar. The course includes three tests which students must score at least an 83 percent or above on in order to pass.
Writing for Public Relations
In this course, students learn how to effectively write material such as press releases, a PSA, op-ed piece, and various content for social media. The class teaches the different writing elements of public relations. Students are required to create their own organization and different writing content about their organization. This class requires students to write multiple articles covering topics like city council meetings, speeches and court. Students must also interview at least two sources that pertain to their story. This class teaches students to write in inverted pyramid style, how to interview sources, how to write clearly and be concise.
Introduction to Hospitality
This course is the intro class to the Hotel and Restaurant Management major, I took it as an elective because I thought it would not only be interesting but also can be related to various aspects of PR like event planning. In this class students are taught the basics of hospitality like how to attract your customers and how to maintain their trust and business.
Strategic Communication
During this class students learn how to formulate an effective strategic communication strategy. Throughout the semester students work to create various strategic communications pieces. They learn important aspects like crisis communication, calendaring,infographics, media relations and spokeperson prep. As a final project, students creat a strategic communication plan that incorporates social media examples, press releases, interview questions and spokesperson preparation.
Foundations of Public Relations
This course is an introductory PR course and covers the basics of public relations, what it is, what it does, and everything it can encompass. For the final project students create and plan an event for a non-profit of their choice. Click here to view my event plan.
Case Studies
The class looks at both successful and unsuccessful public relations cases that pertain to products, media relations, consumer relations, investor relations and crisis communication. As a final project, students were required to examine a case from the past few years and analyze the case thoroughly and provide suggestions as to what they would have done differently. Survey Research Methods
In this course, students use the software, Qualtrics, to develop and distribute a dynamic survey or conduct a focus group for an assigned client based on the client's need. Students then analyze the results and give a presentation to the client detailing their findings and their suggestions for improvement. Public Relations Campaigns
As capstone class, this course is designed to teach students how to formulate and implement an effective public relations campaign. Each student is put into a group and assigned a client for the semester. The group must complete a client and situational analysis for their client and then conduct research to determine the problem. After the problem is defined the students must design a campaign with goals, strategies, and tactics. They also must show how they plan to execute and evaluate their campaign.
